8 Day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania 8 Days - 7 Nights

Location

Mount Kilimanjaro

Duration

8 Days - 7 Nights

Overview

The most scenic path up Kilimanjaro, and the one with the highest summit success rate. Eight days gives your body the time it needs to acclimatize properly, crossing six ecological zones from rainforest to arctic summit.

Why the 8-Day Route

Most Kilimanjaro operators push climbers up in 6 or 7 days. We recommend 8 for Lemosho specifically because the extra day at altitude, spread across Shira Plateau and Karanga Camp, dramatically lowers your risk of altitude sickness and raises your chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Lemosho also starts from the west side of the mountain, away from the busier Marangu and Machame routes, so the first few days feel remote and quiet before the trail merges with others near Barranco Camp.

Day by Day Itinerary

2,100m → 2,800m · 3–4 hrs After registration at Londorossi Gate, you enter Lemosho Gate and begin hiking through dense rainforest to your first camp, named for the old-growth trees that surround it.
2,800m → 3,500m · 4–5 hrs The trail climbs out of the forest into moorland. Your first proper views of Kibo's summit open up as you reach the edge of the Shira Plateau.
3,500m → 3,900m · 3–4 hrs A shorter, gentler day crossing the wide Shira Plateau, giving your body extra time to adjust to the altitude before the terrain gets more demanding.
3,900m → 4,600m → 3,900m · 6–7 hrs A classic "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization day. You reach Lava Tower at 4,600m for lunch, then descend to sleep at Barranco Camp, still at 3,900m.
3,900m → 4,035m · 4–5 hrs The day opens with the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble that looks intimidating but requires no technical skill. From the top, it's a shorter walk to Karanga Camp.
4,035m → 4,673m · 3–4 hrs A short, half-day trek to Barafu, your final camp before the summit. The rest of the day is for resting, eating, and mentally preparing for the night ahead.
4,673m → 5,895m → 3,080m · 11–14 hrs Departure is just after midnight. You reach Stella Point on the crater rim by dawn, then Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro's true summit, shortly after. The long descent continues the same day to Mweka Camp.
3,080m → 1,630m · 2–3 hrs A final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate before transferring back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
